Warren Mack Lyon
Warren Mack Lyon (August 13, 1911- July 14, 2004) was a quiet and sustaining force in the development of the Moapa Valley. Honor student, entrepreneur, civic leader, community service volunteer, and religious leader are a few of his acclaims. These lifetime achievements were crowned with his chief blessings of a wonderful wife and companion (Dorothy Bowman) of 62 earthly years, a family of six children, and a growing posterity.
During his life, Mack exemplified the qualities of a good citizen through hard work and sacrifice as an individual, as a patriarch in his family, and as a community and church leader. He distinguished himself in education by becoming the valedictorian for the graduating class of Moapa Valley High School in 1938. With his high school education completed, Mack attended Brigham Young and Oklahoma A&M Universities. When his family needed his help, Mack set aside university training and returned to Moapa Valley to direct operations at the family owned Lyon Drug Store and Moapa Valley Telephone Company. He served as president of the phone company from 1938 to 1975 and provided leadership needed for the company to modernize services with improved technology. Mack was a pioneer who visualized and believed in the potential of this region of southern Nevada. His work contributed to making Moapa Valley a better community. His concern for the development of Moapa Valley and the surrounding areas led him to serve the community as president of the Chamber of Commerce, member of the Lions Club, counselor in the Logandale Nevada Stake presidency of the LDS Church, and director of the Water District. Other contributing roles he held not only served his community, but also the citizens of this nation. He was actively involved in the development of the Valley of Fire State Park and the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Additionally, many youth benefited from Mack’s more than seventy years of devoted service in the Boy Scout program. His influence is felt to this day and seen in the legacy he leaves behind through a committed life of serving others. It is with great pride that Clark County School District and the Moapa Valley community have dedicated this school to honor W. Mack Lyon. |
